Benefits of Colloidal Oatmeal

Often associated with breakfast and healthy snacks, oatmeal has also been a staple in the skin care community for centuries. Colloidal oatmeal consists of finely-ground oat grains that can be absorbed in the skin through avenues such as cleansers, lotions, ointments and moisturizers. Unlike your typical breakfast meal, colloidal oatmeal is processed with the whole bran which contains skin-soothing properties. Oatmeal without the bran is not very effective at relieving dry, itchy skin or other skin conditions.

Colloidal oatmeal contains a compound called saponins which act as a natural cleansing agent. Many of today’s mainstream synthetic detergents contain harsh chemicals that may irritate one’s skin. For this reason, natural minerals like colloidal oatmeal are highly desired by people who experience dry, itchy or sensitive skin. Colloidal oatmeal is a humectant that contains polysaccharides; a long sugar that binds water to the surface of one’s skin. Colloidal oatmeal is also FDA-approved as a skin protectant.

Hirkus’ Unrefined Goat Milk Soap with real Colloidal Oatmeal is packed with this fragrance-free mineral. It’s important to note that, handcrafted soap bars that contain store-bought oats that are void of bran do not possess the same relieving and soothing properties that are found in colloidal oatmeal. Many people add this soothing oatmeal in to their bath water to alleviate dry, itchy or irritated skin. Also, it is used to treat eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and poison ivy among other skin conditions.

Dry and itchy skin are two symptoms associated with many skin ailments such as atopic dermatitis(eczema) and psoriasis. The itch intensity that one may experience at night can be severe enough to cause sleep deprivation. Furthermore, there is no cure for dermatitis or psoriasis. Avenanthramide is the main anti-inflammatory property in colloidal oatmeal, making an excellent source to use in one’s quest to achieve and maintain healthy skin. Avenanthramides are highly effective in soothing inflammation and reducing itch. In addition, avenanthramides are an antioxidant only found in oats.

Another skin benefit of this unique oatmeal is that it is naturally enriched with phenols – an antioxidant property. It is often used to treat acne because it can absorb excess oils from skin. Cellulose and fiber are emollient properties found in colloidal oatmeal that are used to soothe redness and irritation. A popular skin protectant, colloidal oatmeal is present in many soaps, shampoos and other personal care products.

Itchy skin can be a lot to deal with at times. Most people only experience an itch on a temporary scale when bitten by an insect of a mosquito. There are others, though, who are exposed to severe itchiness merely due to circumstance beyond one’s control. Those with hand dermatitis (eczema) understand that, if untreated, they may experience itchiness so severe that it may effect the appearance of their hands.

Hirkus’ Unscented Pure, Manuka Honey & Oats or Colloidal Oatmeal goat milk soaps bring a much-needed variety to the unscented. Too often, unscented soaps are created as bland and basic as possible void of skin-beneficial properties. Contrary to that “bland and basic” concept, every one of our soaps contain raw shea butter which is abundant with anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. Our handcrafted soap bar contains approximately an ounce of unrefined goat milk without adding water to the base. More importantly, our soap bars provide a luscious lather and gentle cleanse.

In conclusion, we are advocates of promoting all-natural products that contain properties that are beneficial to healthy and sensitive skin. We are advocates of colloidal oatmeal and pair it in select goat milk soaps. It is important to note that colloidal oatmeal, nor our goat milk soaps, are a cure for any skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis. Rather, these products act as agent in soothing and repairing dry, irritated skin.
